Michael Ross is delighted to announce we will be knitting sweaters in beautiful, authentic Donegal wool yarn, from Ireland.
With its characteristic neps or flecks, Donegal yarn clothing boasts a tweed like look and feel. Our plain knit, crew neck sweaters will highlight the texture, neps and quality of this lofty, yarn which is rich in heritage.
Donegal yarn has been spun since the early 1900s, following the establishment of a carpet factory in Kilcar, which increased the demand for woollen yarn. This had a positive impact on local employment, which had previously relied upon agriculture and home-based crafts.
A new spinning mill was built in the mid-1970s, supplying the knitwear industry – local, national and international. The business was renamed from Gaeltarra, to Donegal Yarns in 2008 to reflect the focus on tweed effect flecked yarns and the increase in global consumers.
The yarn goes through a number of processes, from dyeing, blending and carding, to spinning, twisting and scouring. Finally, the cleaned and dried yarn is made into balls or skeins, or packed onto cones, depending on customer requirements, and is then ready for dispatch.
